Articulation Skills at Home
If you are concerned about your child's articulation skills, there are several ways to help at home!
At home and in the classroom, parents and teachers can encourage language development in the following ways.
1. Encourage your children to self-correct their speech and language.
2. Reinforce proper rate of speaking "not too fast" so he/she is better understood.
3. Build background knowledge and vocabulary for new ideas and words.
4. Have children READ, READ AND READ SOME MORE!
Articulation Skills at Home
If you are concerned about your child's articulation skills, there are several ways to help at home!
- Speak clearly, naturally and correctly providing your child with easy to understand speech models.
- Most importantly have a 3-5 minute conversation with your child at dinner, in the car, while playing a game to reinforce carryover skills.
- Model the correct way to say a word. Simply ask the child to repeat a difficult word but do not correct him or her.
- Provide many opportunities for him/her to hear those sounds each day using books, toys, games or do crafts using those troublesome sounds.
- Be patient and let your child practice their speech sounds encouraging child to speak clearly and enunciate their sounds or words.
- Monitor your child's ear infections. Ear infections may cause temporary, mild hearing loss, interfering with your child's ability to hear spoken word.
At home and in the classroom, parents and teachers can encourage language development in the following ways.
- Encourage reading and find material that is of interest to their child-have children READ, READ AND READ SOME MORE!
- Encourage children to form opinions about what they read and hear.
- Encourage children to relate what they read to their personal experiences.
- Help children make connections between what they read and hear at school, at home and in other day activities.
- Talk aloud while helping children understand and solve problems .
- Encourage children to write letters or stories or keep a diary/journal.
- Reinforce proper breath control and rate of speech "not too fast" to improve over intelligibility
